In 2010, Janel Martinez started working for Black Enterprise as a content producer, and from 2012 to 2014, she worked for the same company as a Technology Editor.
After getting inspired by a poem by Sourjourner Truth titled "Ain't I A Woman?" Janel Martinez founded "Ain't I Latina?," a website dedicated to celebrating and lifting up the people in the Afro-Latino community. The website encouraged Afro-Latinas to accept themselves and acknowledge their identity. Janel Martinez has been the Editor-in-chief of the website since 2013.
In 2014, Janel Martinez worked for NewMe Accelerator as a Content Producer, and from 2014 to 2016, she worked for MadameNoire, a subsidiary of Moguldom Media Group. In 2014, she also became the co-founder and CCO of 2020 Shift, where she worked until 2018.
In 2020, during "The Latinx Project" at New York University, which lasted until 2021, Janel Martinez was made the communication and event specialist for the program.
