Born on March 31, 1962, Richard Stockton Rush III, simply known as Stockton Rush, was an American businessman. He was popularly known as the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of OceanGate, a company that specializes in the exploration of the deep sea.
He died, along with four others, on June 18, 2023, after OceanGate's submersible Titan, which they boarded in an attempt to visit the wreck of the Titanic, imploded in the North Atlantic.
Early Life and Education
As a child, Stockton Rush developed an interest in aquatics and aviation and also dreamed of becoming an astronaut and the first to visit Mars. At the age of 12, he began scuba diving, and at 18, he became a commercial pilot. He would have gone on to become a military pilot, but for his visual acuity, he was disqualified.
In 1980, Stockton Rush graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, and in 1984, he graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering. He then went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a Master of Business Administration.
Career
In 2006, after embarking on a submarine in British Columbia, Stockton Rush started developing an interest in exploring the ocean at lower depths.
After attempting to purchase a submersible and failing multiple times, Stockton Rush started developing ideas for starting his own submarine company in 2007. With his belief in a significant market for underwater ocean tourism, he, along with business partner Guillermo Söhnlein, founded OceanGate in 2009.
In 2018, Stockton Rush piloted an excursion with scientists and researchers in the San Juan Islands to observe the habitats of the sand lance and the red sea urchin. His love for underwater exploration was so strong that by 2023, he had already made over 13 trips to the Titanic in the North Atlantic.
