Edgardo Canales was born in 1987 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Sunny Guastella and Edgardo Canales Snr. and Sunny Guastella. While his father was a lawyer, his mother was a former assistant advertising and marketing manager at Our Bodies The Exhibition and a Level II Government Marketing Consultant at Rodan + Fields, a cosmetics company.
Although Edgardo Canales was born in Puerto Rico, he is a citizen of the United States by naturalization based on the Nationality Act of 1940. The Act declares that Puerto Rico is part of the United States when it comes to matters of citizenship and as such, people born on or after January 14, 1941, are citizens of of the United States by naturalization.

Edgardo Canales attended the Boston College’s Wallace E. Carroll Graduate School of Management where he acquired a bachelor's degree in Finance in 2009. He then studied at the University of Puerto Rico, where he acquired his Juris Doctor Degree in 2012.
