Who is Al Gore? Al Gore is an American politician, environmentalist, and businessman who is popularly known for being the 45th Vice President of the United States. He served in this position during the tenure of President Bill Clinton which lasted from 1993 to 2001.

Prior to being the Vice President of the United States, Al Gore served in the military, as a Senator, and as a member of the United States House of Representatives.

Early Life

Albert Arnold Gore Jr. , popularly known as Al Gore, was born on March 31, 1948, in Washington DC, United States. His mother, Pauline (LaFon) Gore, was one of the first female graduates of Vanderbilt University Law School while his father, Albert Gore Sr. , was a United States Representative who later became a Senator from Tennessee and served for 18 years in that position. 

Al Gore is the second child of the two children his parents bore. His other sibling (and elder sister) was Nancy LaFon Gore who later died of cancer in 1984. Growing up, Gore worked alongside other members of his family to raise cattles, grow hay, and grow tobacco on the family's farm in Carthage, Tennessee. 

Education

In 1956, Al Gore started attending St. Albans School, and in 1965, he graduated in 25th position in a class of 51 students. During his time in the school, Gore participated in track and field events, basketball, government, and art. He was also captain of the school's football team. 

After graduating from St. Albans School in 1965, Al Gore enrolled in Harvard College to major in government despite his initial plan being to major in English and write novels. On his second day in Harvard College, he was elected President of the freshman student government council after campaigning for the position. 

In June 1969, Al Gore graduated from Harvard College with an A.B. cum laude.

Al Gore ịs a politician, environmentalist, and businessman. Prior to his time as a politician, Al Gore served in the military. 

Military Service

After graduating from Harvard College in 1969, Al Gore became eligible for military service. At the time, he believed enlisting in the Army was the best for his interests and personal values, and for serving his country. He also saw it as an opportunity to stand against his father's opponent in the election conducted that year, an election his father later lost to the supposed opponent. 

While in the military, Al Gore received basic training at Fort Dix, and was assigned to be a journalist at Fort Rucker, both in Alabama. He was also named Rucker's “Soldier of the Month” in April 1970. 

In May 1971, Al Gore was honourably discharged from the Army. 

Politics

In 1977, Al Gore started serving in the U.S. Congress and was there for 16 years, serving in the House between 1977 and 1985, and in the Senate between 1985 and 1993. 

In 1998, Al Gore decided to run for the United States Presidency through the Democratic Party. He however lost in the party's primary election, finishing third behind Michael Dukakis, then Governor of Massachusetts and eventual winner, and Joe Biden who was a Senator at the time. 

Prior to the 1992 presidential election, Al Gore was offered the opportunity to be Bill Clinton's running mate. Although he was initially reluctant to accept the offer, he later gave in following a clash with the George H. W. Bush administration over issues pertaining to global warming. Bill Clinton eventually won the election and Al Gore became his Vice President. Both men were inaugurated on January 20, 1993. 

On November 5, 1996, Bill Clinton and Al Gore were re-elected as President and Vice-President of the United States for a second term. Both men earned 379 electoral votes and an 8% margin of victory in the popular vote.

Environmentalism

Since co-sponsoring hearings on global warming and toxic waste, and holding the first congressional hearing on climate change, Al Gore has been involved in environmental issues. While being a Senator in 1990, he presided over a conference which aimed at using industrial countries to help underdeveloped countries to grow economically while still protecting their environment. Later that year, he helped contribute to the reduction in green house emissions by pushing for the passage of the Kyoto Protocol. 

Other attempts Al Gore has made to tackle environmental issues include co-launching the General Investment Management, establishing the Alliance for Climate Protection, helping to organize the Live Earth benefit concerts, and most notably becoming a vegan. 

Business

In 2004, Al Gore co-founded Generational Investment Management firm alongside David Blood, former CEO of Golden Sachs Assets Management. Through the firm, he invested in renowned companies like eBay and Amazon, and backed other huge ventures.

In 2005, Al Gore co-founded Current TV along with Joel Hyatt. The liberal news channel grew massively and with time it reached over 60 million households in the United States. Current TV was eventually sold to Al-Jazeera in 2013. 

Al Gore Personal Life

In May 1970, Al Gore got married to Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Aitcheson at the Washington National Cathedral. The couple first met in 1965 at a senior prom in St. Albans School. 

In June 2010, Al Gore and Tipper Gore seperated. The couple have four children together; Karenna Gore, Kristin Carlson Gore, Sarah LaFon Gore, and Albert Arnold Gore III.
