  • In September 2018 he was made a member of the national legislature, Riksdag, as a representative of Malmö Municipality while being a member of the Social Democratic Party
  • In May 2023, he was suspended temporarily from the Swedish parliament after he was seen together with Amin Abu Rashid at the European Palestinians Conference. Amin Abu Rashid was later arrested for financing terrorism linked to Hamas, an Islamist movement. His arrest led to Swedish politicians calling for El-Haj's resignation
  • On February 9, 2024, he was forced to resign from the Social Democratic Party after Social Democrats lost confidence in him
  • Despite his resignation from the party, Jamal El-Haj remains a member of the national legislature but as an independent MP
